Our Journey

From vision to reality - The story of the Africa Methodist Council

The Beginning

The idea of having the Africa Methodist Council dates back to 1986, when the African Methodist Church hosted the World Methodist Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The Nairobi Conference appointed the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church in Kenya, Rev Lawi Imathiu, as the first African to serve as President of the World Methodist Council. After the Conference, African Methodist leaders discussed strategies to bring together the various strands of Methodist families across Africa to encourage fellowship, support one another in mission, and strengthen one another.

1998

First Formal Meeting

Benoni, South Africa

The first formal meeting was held in March 1998 at Northfield Methodist Church, Benoni, South Africa, on the theme "Africa our Parish". Delegates from 13 African countries attended. The meeting agreed to name the organisation All-Africa Methodist Leaders Conference (AAMLC), with His Eminence Dr Sunday Mbang appointed as coordinator.

2010

Revival & Restructuring

London & Durban

After a period of postponements, the British Methodist Church invited an All-Partners Consultation in London in June 2010. This provided a fresh opportunity to revisit the need for a platform for Methodist families across the continent. The AAMLC met in Durban in November-December 2010 and changed the organisation's name to Pan Africa Methodist Consultation Network (PAMCN).

2011

Birth of AMC

Nairobi, Kenya

The PAMCN met in Nairobi, Kenya, from 22-24 March 2011 with 21 participants. This historic meeting made several resolutions that bind the Council today, including renaming PAMCN to the Africa Methodist Council.

Constitutional Framework

Kumasi, Ghana

The Africa Methodist Council Heads of Churches Summit met from October 15-18, 2015, at the Freeman Methodist Centre, Kumasi, Ghana. The Summit adopted the Draft Constitution and established a temporary Secretariat in Ibadan, Nigeria, with Very Revd Opeyemi Awe as Interim General Secretary.

2019
